18 Months and Lemme Tell Ya...

I'll tell ya just what I've been doing since November 22nd, when I last posted.  And it's shocking and provocative and awe-inspiring...

Well, maybe notsomuch.

I've been working and teaching and in my spare time, I've been reading a lot.  A lot for me, is an hour or so every evening.  And I'm a slow reader, but I must admit that I so enjoy the escape these days.  Not that life isn't great, it's just, well, hectic and tiring.

The girls turned 18 months on Saturday.  A year and a half.  Amazing.  I took the day off and took them for their checkup.  Doc says they are right on track, 50th percentile in weight for Addison, slightly lower but still uphill for Lauren.  75th percentile in height.  Lauren seems so SKINNY to me.

I'll be honest.  They are still picky pain in the you know what, eaters.  I mean, some days I want to run away from the kitchen table.  We're talking screaming MORE, MORE, MORE, or smacking the food you're offering by spoon out of your hand and thus splattering it all over the dining room.  And sometimes, I'm good and can predict and defer their actions.  Sometimes I say "no" and they listen.  But sometimes, they are just little devils.  And I'm good.  I'm a teacher. I'm no pushover, and I've got that "never let 'em see you sweat" thing down.  My children are just seriously stubburn!  One day they love something, and the next day they hate it.  If I didn't color my hair, I bet there would be lots of grays from this!

Other than that though, mostly they are awesome.  Oh the signing and the new words and the silliness!!!  The animal sounds!  They are hilarious!  And smart!  And energetic!

Addison could walk months ago, but I think she just didn't want to.  And then about two weeks ago, I think she up and decided it was about time.  So, she toddles everywhere now.  She is still so stiff.  She has the funniest gait.  But she is so stinkin' proud of herself!

I told them that daddy was going to give them a bath, and Addison said, "bath?" and started undressing!  And so, Lauren did the same.  The communication is soooo much better than it was a few months ago.  I remember how frustated they used to get because they couldn't communicate with us.

Two more days of work...  and it can't go fast enough!

Yeah, the food issue is certainly quite frustrating. I'll have to try the veggie/fruit puree packs - thanks! I know what you mean about the sudden understanding and communication - it definitely seems to be a whole new phase :).

AGH, the picky eating things is so where we are at right now with Baby C! And that little turkey can get into the pantry and frequently (like several times a day) helps himself to the cereal. I try to block the door with a chair or something but he is too smart. So he's never starving enough to eat what I'm offering. If you come up with a good tactic, let me know! Our next step, pediatrician says, is the nutritionist. :(

Loved this post. My daughter is a month behind your girls and it's so fun to read where you guys are at because it's so similar. Isn't the communication thing awesome? It's getting better for us as well, which means less frustration overall. And the eating. Yes, it's bad in our house too. I made tator tot hotdish the other day, and my daughter LOVED it! So naturally, the next day I served it to her again, and she HATED it. She throws food, smacks spoons out of my hand. It is very normal to have a couple timeouts during during time. Whew! It is a fun age though. :)

Happy 18months! They are so adorable. Wait until you hear the language explosion that is about to begin, its amazing how much they will begin to say over the next 6months and repeat(so watch out).

Ours have become terrible eaters in the last month or so and i'm so frustrated, they used to be so good. I don't know if its teething(2yr molars suck) or if they have just realize they get to choose what they do, ugh its driving me nuts!

Merry Xmas!

I loved this age!

They're mobile and talkative and can listen :)

Enjoy - my D said it went downhill at 21 months (I think the stubbornness just increases then)

Paula, enjoy your reading!!!

They are too cute!

The food thing is still challenging for us at 3 years old. When I get frustrated, I think back to months ago and realize they have definitely broadened their food horizons and it gives me encouragement knowing that our efforts and consistency seem to be paying off.

I remember the 18 month stage and I think we were in prime food-throwing behavior. We instituted time outs in their high chairs (take all food away, turn chair towards wall) and it worked amazingly well.

Happy 18 months! :)

Communication is one of the best part of this age. Today my twins were getting a kick out of "Thank You" on Elmo DVD! They kept repeating Quakuu and kept laughing away!
