Just in case you didn't know, you can write off any medical expenses over $3,750, including fertility treatments. For more info click here.
To rewind, we spent over $28,000 in fertility treatments last year. Plus I'm sure I left out some things. It should be more like 30 G's.
Sooooo, things to bring (and break down the expenses when you put them in as it supposedly helps to prevent an audit):
1. IVF/FET, etc.
2. Cryopreservation
3. Anesthesia
4. Co-pays
5. fertility meds
6. mileage to and from the doctor's office.
This cut our income significantly, and we have a beautiful tax return coming to us, more than double what we normally get! We are thrilled! We are going definitely booking a vacation! We'll call it a mental health vacation. Expensive therapy.
I am just waiting for this to piss someone off! I'm sure if I posted it on some regular forum that wasn't frequented by the chorus, I'd get some backlash.
So, just for fun, here are the reasons you shouldn't be mad about my tax write-offs:
1. We are nothing like the dumb octuplet lady. (Oh, for the love of Pete, someone tell blogger to put the word octuplet in spell check!)
2. We have NO children.
3. We'd be happy with just one.
4. We are hard working people who contribute to society.
5. I'm a teacher! I'm good at the kid thing.
6. We'll raise our child to be respectable and productive.
7. The @#$%^&*( state of Virginia is bass-ackward and doesn't mandate ANYTHING having to do with fertility.
8. My insurance hasn't paid didly, aside from diagnostics.
9. Since I'm a teacher and I don't make squat, and my husband only makes a little more than squat, we've sacrificed a lot financially to make a baby.
10.Read: We really want a baby!!!
11. INFERTILITY IS A MEDICAL CONDITION people! It isn't a nose job, or liposuction!
The only downside is that I had this huge conversation with our tax lady about IVF and she is now in the know about the happenings of my uterus.

Hey I don't think you need to justify squat to anyone about what you spend your money on and so thus what you're entitled to claim.
IMO it shows just how MUCH you want a baby......

p.s Enjoy the holiday!
Keep in mind that you also can write off any mileage, tolls, accupuncture, etc.. We just went through this and ours was around $26,000 for this year. Our insurance didn't pay one cent when those 'infertility' as a diagnosis. I think our tax guy almost passed out when he saw how much stuff we had for him to go through.
You don't need to justify yourself, I think insurance should cover some of this stuff. We work our butts off and if I lived one state over it would be covered but not in mine.
Oh my god honey, dont you dare justify yourself!! Fuck anyone who has something nasty to say. They can take there fertile bullshit and shove it right up there fertile asses!
You deserve a giant tax return! And a vacation. And a baby. You guys deserve it all.
(oops. sorry bout the potty mouth....bit of pent up rage I guess.)
Giant hugs!
Hey Niki!
I forgot, she DID take off of the mileage as well, even though it's only 5 miles from my house. That was a nice little chunk o change!
Twenty-two grand: that's how much I spent last year. Fourteen hundred miles driven: no joke. Anyone who doesn't think I should get a deduction can kiss my blankety blank blank.
And that's how I feel about it.
ANYWAY! Hope you enjoy the refund. You've certainly earned it!
Have a wonderful holiday. You deserve it!
I'm so glad you were able to deduct your medical expenses. The fertiles get enough tax breaks.
No reason to justify anything, we are writing it off as well. Can;t wait to see how much we are getting back! Hey hows your beta?
our tax guy gave us a big 'you should adopt' speech last year. now that we're STILL not pregnant, I am preparing for this year's pitch on adoption. at least he's an adoptive parent, not just someone who thinks he knows better, but still. not looking forward to it.
glad you're able to get the write off!

Thanks PJ. I didn't know about this. I have always done our taxes myself because they didn't seem that complicated. Now I'm wondering if I am missing a bunch of deductions by doing this. I heard that if you are part of a teachers union you get something back for all the dues you pay. Maybe I should look into someone doing them for me this year. . .
I love the vacation idea and may have to use it too!! Oh so needed after all the hell of IVF after IVF........ Enjoy, PJ!!
And I think the fact that we don't have children to write off justifies it even more.....
Just wanted to add that the $3750 you listed is only if your adjusted gross income is $50,000 as this is 7.5% of your AGI.
If your AGI is $75,000 then 7.5% is $5625. This amount cannot be written off, but anything above this amount can. So if you spent $10,000 on medical expenses you could write off $4375.
I have one hellacious Excel spreadsheet detailing every expense (including mileage) as well as a giant binder with receipts separated by type (lab expenses, procedures, office visits, medications, and travel). That alone is worth some cash back....
Hell yeah you should get the deductions! It's completely outlined and LEGAL, so why the heck not! Don't forget things like chiropractic, insurance premiums, psychiatric care, psychoanalysis, meals at the hospital, dental, and (a big one for me) parking fees and bridge tolls!
Yep, ours will be pretty hefty this year. You deserve to do this - good for you for using it for vacation money!
I loved this post. . . And you're right, infertility IS a medical condition. I'm so sick of it being looked at elsewhere. I wish there was financial help available to those of us who struggle with this.
Thanks for the heads up on it being a tax write off. My hubby and I are also in need of a mental break holiday. :-D
I just looked at our crazy spreadsheet - it was 3,439 miles we drove. Yes that is not a typo. We ended up going out of state for IVF so I had a lot of early as heck drives. Basically, the clinic had a better reputation, prices were a bit lower since people who live in IL well most of them have coverage for IVF cause it's mandated, they also gave us a ton of med samples which we never would've gotten here in WI. I'm still waiting to find out if we'll actually get any money back from taxes or if our guy just passed out from all of our paperwork.
Don't get me started on my rant about viagra and many other things being covered by insurance but infertility treatment is not. My husband's company even gives $$ towards adoption but we inquired if we could use that towards infertility treatment and got a big fat no.
DAMN IT! Nobody told us!! Oh well, I'm glad you found out. I'm sure it helped :)
I echo what was said - no need to justify!!!!! I am glad that you are going to use the return to get away...hopefully you will be successful in 2009 and will be able to claim a dependent...!
Thanks for the info!
Please: You deserve all the money you can get. And you deserve to spend it on a damn fine vacation.
Anyone who bitches about IFers getting to write off medical expenses should forgo their child deductions. Bastards.
Bravo for the post. You have support here!
I have yet to do our taxes, but will also have some major write offs. It is a medical condition for petes sake and since insurance doesn't cover it, I don't feel bad at all about taking the deduction.
Take Care!!!
I can't wait to do our taxes this year! We will actually get money back instead of owing for the fifth straight year.
You are totally preaching to the choir here!!! You take that money and go on that much needed vaca!
thanks for the information... I had no idea fertility treatments were tax deductible! Good luck to you. I am in the same boat... 38 years old... low Estrogen, high FSH. Gotta go get the injectables, but have been putting it off due to the cost.
Amen I've done the same thing. Gave all the info to CPA. Just waiting to see what we come up with.
Here from LFCA...
Thanks for the tips! I was planning to deduct everything, but might have forgotten about mileage and tolls, and I wouldn't have thought to break it down since I prefer not to broadcast IF to yet another faceless set of bureaucrats.
I haven't gotten around to the taxes yet, and I'm a little nervous to add everything up. I have estimated that it will be around $40k, but it will probably end up being more.
Hey, no need to explain. You deserve every damn penny of that refund. Even that is NOT enough.
Enjoy your vacation! An I'm a teacher too!
E
Thanks for writing this and breaking it down!
The tax write-off is the only good thing about all the money we spent last year(m/c certainly doesn't seem to be worth it).
Our insurance is from VA, too, crap-ola. We live in MD, so are totally annoyed to live in a mandate state, but be insured from a "we cover nothing beyond the basics" state.
We just had egg donor/IVF treatment (after 3 failed IUI treatments) and I am now pregnant. Unfortunately living in the San Francisco Bay are we ended up spend about $43K in 2009.
My big question is if any of the "egg donor's" medical procedures/office visits/meds are deductible. It's obvious we can claim mine, but unsure of the 3rd party donor expenses which adds up to over 1/2.
Thanks, Michele
